Welcome Note

A warm-hearted welcome to our wonderful Armenia and of course AMSP's exchange programme! We are already looking forward to host you and show our country to you. Welcome Friends.jpg

Overview

Armenia lies on the southern slopes of the Armenian Mountains in the Lesser Caucasus and is bordered by Georgia, Turkey, Azerbaijan and Iran. Its highest peak is Mount Aragats, 4,090m (13,415ft), and even its deepest valleys lie 450 to 700m (1,200 to 1,870ft) above sea level. Its biggest lake is Lake Sevan in the east. Armenia is a trove of history, littered with crumbling churches perched in spectacular settings. Landscapes transition rapidly from lush forests to shimmering lakes and stark deserts. But the best thing about Armenia is the Armenians themselves - ever welcoming and eager to show off their country to visitors. Christianity arrived in 301AD and Armenia proudly calls itself the world's oldest Christian nation. Since the break up of the Soviet Union Armenia has seen a revival of nationalism and traditional culture. The capital Yerevan is the nation's hub of cultural activity and progressive thought, sporting impressive museums and a lively modern arts scene. Cafe culture has been perfected and it's de rigueur to spend inordinate amounts of time lingering over bottles of Armenian cognac.

Our health care system

Since independence, the health care system in Armenia has undergone numerous changes that have effectively transformed a centrally run state system into a fragmented health care system that is largely financed from out-of-pocket payments. Armenia is increasingly engaged in reforming the system from one that emphasizes the treatment of disease and response to epidemics towards a system emphasizing prevention, family care and community participation. The shift towards a primary care orientation and community approach is noticeable, with gradually increased roles for health workers to influence the determinants of health. However, a gap in the distribution of human and technological resources for health remains

The hospitals

The clerckship of our incomings will be mainly organized in Yerevan State Medical University's clinics. “Muratsan” University Hospital and University Clinical Hospital No.1. You can check for departments at http://www.ysmu.am/en/about-ysmu/clinics.

Our medical education

Medical education in Armenia is being represented by medical faculties in few private universities and the main governmental Yerevan State Medical University (YSMU). All of them are situating in Yerevan- the capital city. The YSMU has 4 departments: General Medicine,Dentistry,Pharmacology and Military Medicine.Basically you have to pass a test to be able to study Medicine. After this the curriculum lasts for 6 years. The first three years are mostly preclinical studies, followed by clinical studies. After graduation we have to do residency in desired field ,which lasts 3 years mainly (exepct OB/GYN and Plastic surgery -4 years. File:YSMU.jpg

Cultural differences

As Armenia is situating between Europe and Asia, culturally we are the combination of both civilizations and there is no significant advises for dressing or behavior. We hope that everybody will feel comfortable in this tolerant and friendly atmosphere. National specialties: • Shampours (skewers packed with all kinds of marinated meat and vegetables). • Ghapama (pumpkin stew with rice, raisins, apples and cinnamon). • Khash is a national institution rather than just a dish, with poems and songs throughout the centuries being composed in homage to it. It's a broth made from hamhocks and herbs, served with lots of garlic and bread.

National drinks: • Brandies are exceptional, especially Dvin. • Armenian beers such as Kotayk and Kihikia. • Areni red wine is particularly lauded. Many Armenian wines are world-renowned semi-sweet or dessert wines.

Accommodation & Boarding

We are placing our incomings in University hostels. The hostels provide spaces for various activities such as reading, watching television, etc. Accommodations include rooms with up to three beds; the WCs (bathroom units) and the shower cubicles are located at both sides of the floors. There are two laundry rooms and a communal kitchen. All dormitory rooms are furnished with the necessary utilities and bed shits are provided. Please do not forget to bring your own white coats, stetoscopes,OP uniforms and towels.

Social program

Local & National transportation

The main way to Armenia, due to the geopolitical situation of the region is by air. Taxi costs about 100-150 drams (almost equal less then half euro) for trips within the center of yerevan. There are counters almost in all taxies.

Buses and minibuses cost 100 dram (equal to 1/3 of euro) per person and can take you to almost any place within yerevan. Destinations are usually posted on the front and the right side of the bus so that people can know where they are going ,but these are in armenian.

Weather

Continental, mountain climate (over 90% of the territory is over 900m/2,286ft above sea level). During the summer, days can be hot and dry with temperatures falling sharply at night. Winters are cold with snow. May to June and September to October are good times to visit the country, as the weather is warm but mild.
