Our International Federation of Medical Students' Associations of Brazil is very proud to welcome you in our hot tropical lands. You are about to enter a broad variaty of cultural and educational experiences, that all together will make this exchange a certainly unforgetable moment!
Overview
A country for everyone
Brazil is unique for its richness of nature, culture, economy and history. This lends the country a Wonderland quality, with countless tourist attractions, and diversity as our main instrument to fulfill this potential. Beaches, forests, mountains, rivers, festivals, diversified cuisine, national parks, and historical towns are scattered among 26 states and the Federal District, where the Capital, Brasília, is located.
This racial mixture has generated a nation of happy, sharing people, a country where all come together under their differences and diversity, in an environment of peaceful coexistence. We are indeed, a country for everyone. In addition, our economic growth allied to the country’s strategic position in the South American makes us a focal point for attracting technical, commercial and social events, which in conjunction with the leisure options, define Brazil as a special country, with such a plethora of travel opportunities on offer.
Our health care system
The National Health System (Sistema Único de Saúde - SUS) is one of the largest public health systems in the world. It ranges from simple outpatient care to organ transplants, ensuring full access, universal and free for the entire population of the country.
Bolstered by an expanded concept of health, the SUS was created in 1988 by the Brazilian Federal Constitution, to be the health system of more than 180 million Brazilians. In addition to offering consultations, examinations and admissions, the system also promotes vaccination campaigns and preventive actions and health surveillance - as surveillance of food and drug registration - thereby reaching the lives of each of the Brazilians.
Cultural differences
You will find a lot of cultural differences throughout the country but most brazilians are hospitable, informal and friendly. Shaking hands, kissing both cheeks and, more familiarly, hugging are the usual forms of greeting.
Portuguese is the official language, accents vary geographically, and not everybody can speak english. Maybe spanish is easier to understand.
Casual wear is common.
Brazil is a safe country. Just try to be discreet.
Accommodation & Boarding
You’re going to stay in some host student’s house, who may live alone, with the family or with other students. Most of the students usually live with their families. Depending of the conditions and space of their homes, they can choose for paying a 1 month boarding house for you. His/her e-mail will be sent to you, so you can meet each other before you come. Your meals will be defined by your host. You can also eat at the hospital, at home or at restaurants. Remember that the host student won’t give you pocket money.
Social program
Depends on the local committee which is held the stage. Includes everything from festivals and university celebrations , beaches, national food & drink party (where exchange students and local students prepare typical food and drinks of their respective countries). Local & National transportation
The principal means of transport used in Brazil are plane and bus. How you plan to travel depends on the distance to be traveled. Costs as well.

Weather
Because of it’s size, Brazil has very differents weathers. In general, we have wet summer and dry winter.
The North is hot and wet. It rains all over the year. The Northeast is really hot and during the winter (june to september) it rains a lot. The Central West is hot and usually dry. The Southeast is usually hot but can be cold during the winter. The South is not to hot and can be really cold in the winter. This is the only region where can snow but it is not common.
Social life
- Money
In every airport you will easily find Currency Exchange Banks or agencies, where you can get some Reais (Brazilian money). Here in Brazil only our currency money is accepted to pay things, so we advise you to exchange some o your money since your arrival. Below we try to show you an idea of how cheap are some stuff here:
- Ordinary meal: R$10,00 = US$4
- Coke (can): R$2 = US$1
- Small coffee: R$2,00 = US$1
- Pizza (family size): R$30 = US$15
- BigMac, with French fries and a soft drink: R$15= US$7,5
- Train ticket: R$2,80 = US$1,4 Bus ticket: R$2,50 = US$5
- Cinemark tickets: R$16,00 = US$8 (1/2 price for International Student Card) Phone calls
- Communications
To make a phone call from your country, the dial code is + 55 (Area Code) (Phone Number). The area code of each city you can check on the specific page of each local committee, on the bottom.
Once you are in Brazil, to make international calls, dial: 0021 + (Country Code) + (Area Code) + (Phone Number). Remember that when you make phone calls from your host’s house you will have to make it as a collect call. To do it, you must dial 9 before the complete number.
