Come for exchange!

Welcome Note

We are pleased that you have chosen to attend Peking Union Medical College (PUMC) for your exchange program. We wish you a pleasant month in PUMC and in Beijing.

Situated in eastern Asia, and on the western shore of the Pacific Ocean, the People’s Republic of China covers a land area of 9.6 million square kilometers, with an inland and coastal water area of more than 4.7 million square kilometers and an eastern and southern continental coastline extending for about 18,000 kilometers. China shares common borders with 14 countries and is adjacent to 8 nations on the ocean. There are 4 municipalities directly under central government administration, 23 provinces, 5 autonomous regions and 2 special administrative regions. The capital city is Beijing.

Our health care system

Until the end of 2011, China has 21979 hospitals and 2.46 million doctors. 62% of the hospitals are public hospitals and the others are owned by private sector. In China there are now 1.82 doctors per 1,000 people. About 4.98 percent of gross domestic product (GDP) is allocated to healthcare, 35% of which comes from the private sector. After many years of development, life expectancy has reached 73.5 years old.

In China, there are now different levels of hospitals. Public hospitals are grouped into three tiers. At the top are tertiary hospitals (large, tier3). They provide a wide range of healthcare services. Next are secondary hospitals (often regional). They mostly treat outpatients and provide general health services. Primary hospitals are often small community health centers and they provide services in the community. Private hospitals are mostly special service hospitals, such as cosmetic hospitals. They target special population such as foreigners and wealthy people. Their revenue is generated from personal expenditure.

China is now using the “Basic Health Care Insurance for Urban and Rural Employees”. Features include: • Compulsory participation for all employers and compulsory enrolment for all formal employees; • Funding: social pooling and individual accounts have been established with contributions by both employers and employees; • Management of health insurance funds is carried out by municipal governments and regulated by the relevant government bodies.

A “new rural cooperative health insurance” program is also being used for the rural population. 97.5% of rural population participates in this program.

Local & National transportation

Subway: Subways are another convenient means of transportation for those traveling in downtown. So far subways are available in four Chinese cities: Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, and Tianjin.

Bicycle: There are bicycles for rent in some hotels in Beijing and some other tourist cities. Riding old-fashioned Pedi cabs for a tour of Beijing's hutongs and back alleys

China has a marked continental monsoonal climate characterized by great variety. Northerly winds prevail in winter, while southerly winds reign in summer. The four seasons are quite distinct. The rainy season coincides with the hot season. From September to April the following year, the dry and cold winter monsoons from Siberia and Mongolia in the north gradually become weak as they reach the southern part of the country, resulting in cold and dry winters and great differences in temperature. The summer monsoons last from April to September.

The warm and moist summer monsoons from the oceans bring abundant rainfall and high temperatures, with little difference in temperature between the south and the north. China's complex and varied climate results in a great variety of temperature belts, and dry and moist zones. In terms of temperature, the nation can be sectored from south to north into equatorial, tropical, sub-tropical, warm-temperate, temperate, and cold-temperate zones; in terms of moisture, it can be sectored from southeast to northwest into humid (32 percent of land area), semi-humid (15 percent), semi-arid (22 percent) and arid zones (31 percent).
