== Welcome Note ==

Welcome to SCOPE and SCORE in France.

These exchange programs are very important and haven't stopped growing on a national and international level in France since we started participating.  

French students love having the opportunity not only to travel around the globe experiencing other medicine and meeting new people but also welcoming people into thier daily lives and showing foreigners our culture and country.

== Overview ==

France (French: France), officially the French Republic (French: République française), is a country in Europe. Its capital city is Paris. It is a member of the European Union. It is known for its many monuments, structures, and places such as the Louvre, the Eiffel Tower, the Arc de Triomphe, Giverny, Mont Saint Michel, Versailles, and Notre Dame. 
France is divided into régions and départements.
The country has been one of the world's largest powers since the end of the 17th century. In the 18th and 19th centuries, it built a very big colonial empire across West Africa and Southeast Asia. Nowadays, it does not exist. It is the most visited country in the world. About 82 million foreign tourists visit it every year.
France is a founding member of the European Union. It has the largest land area of any of the members. France is also a founding member of the United Nations, and a member of the G8 and NATO. It is one of the five permanent members of the United Nations Security Council. 
Some well-known cities in France include Nice, Nancy, Marseille, Bordeaux, Lille, Lyon, Toulouse, Strasbourg, Rennes, Nantes and Paris.

== Our health care system ==

The French healthcare system was named by the World Health Organization as the best performing system in the world in terms of availability and organization of health care providers.

== The hospitals ==
It's difficult to say what your daily program will be like ; it's very much up to you ! If you ask questions actively, you'll find more answers, and you'll get a more enriching experience. Incoming students are often surprised by the fact that if you want to do or see something, you always have to ask. That’s the way it works here, you’ll never find a doctor saying ”come, you have to see this or do that”, you’ll have to be the one asking. 

You might be able to shadow a doctor, but it’s more likely that you’ll follow the french students called ”externes”. 


The clinic expects you to arrive punctually.


The patients speak English only occasionally, so the conversation can be limited unless you speak French fluently. 


In most LCs you are expected to work from 8 or 9 until 12 or 14. If you ask nicely enough, a day or two off is possible for longer trips around the country.

== Our medical education ==

In France in order to enter any medical faculty all you need to is pass the final exams at the end of high school.  However, there are only a limited number of places (chosen by the gouvernement) to get into second year and those who get the best grades go through. 
In first year students learn about fondamental sciences, human and social science, cellular and molecular biology and anatomie.
In second year we learn most about semiotics, physiology anatomy and some more science.  In third yead we treat semiotics, immunology, bacteriology, mycology, parasitology, haematology, anatomy.  From fourth year onwards we start preparing our final national exams that everyone passes at the end of sixth year.  In function of their grades people get to choose their town and speciality, there are only a limited number of places for each speicialty per town (again decided by the gouvernment) so the most performant students get what they want where they want and those at the end have to take what is left.
To become a general practioner you have to do 3 years internship, surgeon and radiologist 5 years and all the other specialities take 4 years.  At the end of the internship you present your thesis, for surgeons they have to do 3 years residency in a teaching hospital for all others if they want a career in the hospital they have to apply for a residents position.  Residency lasts 2 years or a maximum of 4 years if there isn't a vacant position in the hospital.

== Cultural differences ==

Shaking hands and, more familiarly, kissing both cheeks, are the usual forms of greeting. The form of personal address is simply Monsieur or Madame without a surname.
 

Mealtimes are often a long, leisurely experience.  You'll be able to  enjoy our famous "baguette" and our numerous cheeses. And why not taste frogs' legs or snails ?
 

Casual wear is common. 


A ban on smoking in workplaces (including airports, railway stations, shops and offices etc) came into force in February 2007, and bars and restaurants joined the list in January 2008.


French is the official language.
Many people speak at least some English, but you'll soon realize french people are quite bad at English ;-)

== Accommodation & Boarding ==

Lodging is free on bilateral exchange.

For boarding, it depends on the LC. 

Incomings are usually accomodated by french outgoings so you'll get a chance to discover the french way of life from inside.


== Social program ==

Social programs are organised by Local Exchange Committees, though students are expected to be independent. Day trips and city tours can be organized, but for your own pleasure and to satisfy your different tastes and interests, we advised you to explore our cities on your own, wether by metro or tram or buses, we have one of the best transportation systems in the world.


== Local & National transportation ==

o	France has two major international airports in Paris: '''Roissy Charles de Gaulle''' and '''Orly'''.

o	A number of other airports have significant international services (mainly within Europe): '''Lille''', '''Lyon''', '''Marseille''', '''Nice''', and '''Toulouse'''.

o	From '''Paris''' you can reach any of our LCs by TGV or train. '''TGV''' (pronounce teh-jeh-veh) is the world-renowned high-speed train (travelling at speeds of over 300km/h) . Other trains are called “Corail” or “TER”. 



o	Trains ticketing is handled by the national train network SNCF. Internet bookings are possible. [http://www.voyages-sncf.com]  


== Weather ==

France is a large country, extending for some 1,000 km from north to south and from east to west. That’s why, there are considerable variations of climate within France.


- Northern and northwestern France is most affected by the changeable weather brought in by Atlantic disturbances and its climate is rather similar to that of Britain.

- Southern France has a Mediterranean-type climate and is warmer than the north, particularly in summer.

- Central and eastern France, has a more continental climate, which bears some resemblance to that found in west Germany and Switzerland.

- The Mediterranean coast enjoys hot summers and mild winters.

Everywhere else in France the weather can be changeable at all times of the year.
