Welcome to Halle!

Halle is located in the south of the German state Sachsen-Anhalt. With its 230,000 inhabitants, Halle is situated along the river Saale and only 180 km South-west of Berlin. Leipzig, one of many other great tourist destinations is only a 20 minute train ride away.
Halle used to be called „the grey diva“ until the early nineties. It was home to many workers who spent their lives in the nearby factories. Since then, a lot has changed: Today, Halle represents a city full of bike-riding, tatooed, artistically minded students.
It´s a diverse city with a great cultural program on the one hand as you find theaters, an opera, independent cinemas and the city´s love for classical music when it comes to its most famous child: Georg Friedrich Händel. On the other hand, you’ll find beautiful old buildings next to pure nature right within the city along the river Saale.
With approximately 14,500 students the Martin-Luther-University offers not only a large amount of different subjects and the possibility for an inspiring learning environment, but it is also the background of a nice, wild student night life with clubs, concerts and home parties.
Halle has a lot to offer when it comes to sightseeing. Due its old buildings and long history, you will be fascinated by the variety this city has to offer.

The best thing about Halle is the chocolate: Don`t miss out on some original Halloren chocolates manufactured directly in the Halloren Chocolate Factory.
In Halle, almost every student shares an apartment with other students. You´ll be most likely living in such a shared flat - which helps getting in touch with the German way of studying and of course with Halle’s students.
The Martin Luther University of Halle-Wittenberg is one of the oldest unversities in Germany being created in 1817 through merging of the University of Wittenberg (founded 1502) and the University of Halle (founded 1691). It has a long tradition and therefore amazing acitectural auditoriums. You will enjoy studying in these locations! The clinic combines traditions and modern medical care. With its 2850 people working there, 38.500 patients a year and 1100 beds, it is the biggest provider in the South of Sachsen-Anhalt.
We provide places at three hospitals in Halle: Universitätsklinikum Kröllwitz ([1]), Bergmannstrost ([2]) and Krankenhaus St. Elisabeth und St. Barbara ([3]). Depending on the departments you are interested in, we will try our best to get you into the most suiting department at one of the different hospitals. If you are lacking German language skills, we will be happy to assist you, but recommend an exchange with the surgical departments since the doctors speak English very well. Unfortunately, the patients usually don’t speak English.
Currently, we can offer research projects with the departments of Biochemistry, Physiology, Pathology and the Center for Medical Basic Research. Please check the database for updates!
Even if you are not a big sports fan, you definitely have to discover Halle by bike! Otherwise you would miss the little hidden places, it took you longer in order to get from one place to another (you see a bike also means ten minutes additional sleep in the morning before work!) and you couldn’t stop spontaneously on your way home for a little sunbath in the park.

By train you will reach nice places to visit easily. Leipzig, Berlin and Dresden are just a few of the destinations you can reach with 2 hours. If you are interested in hiking, the Harz mountains are just around the corner. For those who enjoy themselves on bike or canoeing-trips, there are beautiful routes around Halle. The lovely cycle path to the Petersberg is just one of them.
We are about eight students taking care of the organization of the professional and research exchange. We will also be your contact persons during your stay. We are setting up a social program in order to help you having a great time while you are here!
