Lima is the capital city of Peru, and its largest and most populous city. Located on the central coast of this country, along the Pacific Ocean, forming a continuous urban area extends over the river valleys Chillón, Rimac and Lurin, within the provinces of Lima, headquarters, and Callao. It was founded by Spanish conquistador Francisco Pizarro on January 18, 1535, as the "City of Kings." It was the capital of the Viceroyalty of Peru during the Spanish regime and after independence it became the capital of the Republic of Peru.

Lima, the Pearl of America and three times crowned King City is a metropolis in constant growth. Mixing tradition and modernity, the Peruvian capital, today is the product of a rich fusion of cultures and customs that reflect the character of citizens of the many regions that make up Peru, and those foreigners living in our country.

The Peruvian capital, is home to over 7 million people, focusing almost two thirds of economic activity and industrial Peru. The City of Kings is full of magic and color. Thanks to its historical legacy was declared Cultural Patrimony of Humanity.



SOCIEM-USMP is the society of medical students at the San Martin de Porres University. The university is located in Av. Alameda del Corregidor 1531,Urb.Los Sirius, las viñas, La Molina.





Climate

The climate in Lima is quite peculiar. Apart from its high levels of humidity and low precipitation, surprised by its strange features despite being located in a tropical 12 degrees south latitude and almost at sea level. The central coast of Peru shows a series of microclimates due to the atypical and influential cold Humboldt current which originates from the Antarctica, the nearness of the mountains and the tropical location, giving Lima a subtropical climate, desert and humid at the same time. You could say that Lima's climate is warm tropical, without excessive heat or cold extremes that require heating to at home. The average annual temperature is 18.5 to 19 ° C with a maximum annual summer about 29 ° C. Summer, December to April, with temperatures ranging between 28 and 21 ° C. Winters range from mid-June to September with temperatures ranging between 19 and 12 ° C, 8 ° C being the lowest temperature recorded historically. The months of spring and autumn (September, October and May) are mild temperatures ranging between 23 and 17ºC. Furthermore, the relative humidity is very high (100%), leading to persistent fog in June and December until the summer when the clouds are lower. It was sunny, hot and humid in summer (December-April), cloudy and mild in winter (June to September).



Brief History

The San Martín de Porres University traces its origins to the Institute Pro-Deo, a house dedicated to the cultivation of philosophy and theology founded the Dr. RP Vicente Sanchez Valer the Order of Preachers (Dominicans). Shortly after Pope John XXIII raised to the altars to the Blessed Martin de Porres Fray Velásquez of the Dominican Order of Peru, the University was founded under the advocation of the new saint, the May 17, 1962.

In the early years created the first Institutes (Philosophy and journalists, among others, and then added other careers (accounting, law). In the seventies, the University City`s land was acquired in the district of Santa Anita and, in the eighties were strengthened foundations of what today would be the great San Martín de Porres University. The nineties were successful for the development of our university; Our university built modern faculties of Medicine, Architecture and Engineering, Dentistry and Law.

This commitment has made it the university that has invested in Information Technology with over 10,000 computers in 16 campus completely interconnected. For example the Faculty of Medicine highlights the Laboratory of Genetics and Molecular Biology, devoted to studies of international standard in virtual education was a resounding success by engaging more than one thousand physicians around the world in the first update course offered by the School of Medicine in conjunction with other faculties.

In over 45 years of community service, the San Martin de Porres University has reached its own merits, a special place in the Peruvian educational system. Today is a modern institution which has 9 faculties offering eighteen careers, 1 school (post-12 sections), 3 doctorates, more than thirty thousand students and 2,500 workers, including teachers and administrative expenses. Is Peru's largest university and ranks among the top two private universities in the country.

The infrastructure and organization achieved by the University allow you to meet the most demanding and diverse academic and administrative requirements of teachers and students, as well as extracurricular activities designed to provide a comprehensive training, which was reflected in the accreditation of its School of Medicine, one of the first Peruvian to get this recognition required by law.


Only in the last decade of the twentieth century, the San Martin de Porres University (USMP) graduated more than 40,000 professionals and contributed to world culture through the publication of over two hundred books and sponsorship of such notable works as the staging of opera Aida at the Huaca Pucllana, a first in Latin America. Please note that the University devotes significant resources to support more than three thousand distinguished students whose limited resources would not allow them to access higher education quality. This support is reflected in more than U.S. $ 1'700, 000 in scholarships awarded through our office of student welfare.

Launched the third millennium, the University has renewed its commitment to the development of the country to establish the first Institute of Government, El Instituto del vino, Club Deportivo Universidad San Martin de Porres, the clinic "Cada Mujer" and more recently, the first VIRTUAL UNIVERSITY Peru. As we approach the half century of existence, the Universidad de San Martin de Porres look to the future with optimism and confidence have become a pillar of the development of Peru.

Nowadays, USMP have:

-16 Campuses with excellent structures.

- 8 faculties18 specialties and 12 Postgrade’s sections.

- 29,124 students, 2641 teachers and 810 people as administrative staff.

- 10 000 computers interconnected.

- 2 TV studies, 1 deontological clinic, 1 obstetric clinic, 1 genetic and molecular biology lab.

- Laboratories with systems of geographic information and processing of imagines, etc.

- Certificate ISO 9000:2000 in specialties of human medicine, tourism and hostelry and communication science.

- 1 professional soccer team.

- In 2006, The subsidiary in Chiclayo was inaugurated with an inversion more than 10 million of dollars.


The Academic Program of Medicine of the University of Saint Martin de Porres, started its activities under Resolution No. 483-83-R, dated 06 July 1983. In 1986, by agreement of the University Assembly, issued Rectoral Resolution No. 462-86, which is integrated as a School of Medicine, Faculty of Medicine and Dentistry, but the December 29, 1988, the University Assembly agreed separate Dental Medicine, with Rectoral Resolution No. 052-89, which created the College of Human Medicine.



Where is the hosting and boarding?

You will stay in a room of a student's private house/apartment during the time of your clerkship. We try to organize houses or apparmtents near to the hospital you are going to work in, which is not always that easy.

It is okey if you arrive 1-2 days in advance to acclimatisate.

Regard that sometimes there are special conditions concerning the room in which you will stay. We will tell you about this in your CA.

About our Medical Education and School

The education in our faculty is for 7 years. The first year it is about general studies. The second and the third year are pre-clinical studies. The fourth year to the sixth year is for clinical studies; and the last year is for Internship.

After the Internship, the title of Surgery medic will be obtained by the presentation of a thesis or doing an exam.

The curricula have 60 curses between 6 years.


The construction of the new College of Human Medicine startet in 1994, and Dr. Frank Dean Lizaraso Caparó located in the in Av. Alameda del Corregidor 1531,Urb Los Sirius, las viñas, La Molina. The classes in this modern local began in January 1997 and ,since then, has become the medical school's most important modern Peru, having the International Accreditation of Medical Schools by RIEV. Today our faculty does significant achievements in our Research Institute in its different branches (Genética, Medicina Tradicional Andina, Biochemistry, Microbiology, Pharmacology, etc.).

Our faculty has an anatomic amphitheater, with modern equipments, special models about systems of the body which are useful as a didactic material.

The simulation center is the unique and the most modern in the Perú. It has 8 virtual simulators: 3 simulators for Laparoscopic Surgery, 2 simulators for Interventional vascular procedures, 2 simulators for high and down endoscopic procedures, 1 simulator for urological procedure. They are use in pregrade and postgrade studies.

Spanish is the language spoken by medical staff and patients. For an ideal stay you should have some basic knowledge and understand Spanish.

To make this less complicated please go to the company doctor of your hometown faculty in advance and bring a certificate for the following required things:

Jorge Chávez International Airport (IATA: LIM, ICAO: SPIM), known as Aeropuerto Internacional Jorge Chávez in Spanish, is Peru's main international and domestic airport. It is located in Callao, 11 kilometers (7 mi) from the Historic Centre of Lima and 17 km (11 mi) from Miraflores. Callao is the port city now fully integrated with Lima, the nation's capital. In 2008, the airport handled 8,288,506 passengers and 98,733 aircraft movements.



Urban Transport

The Public urban transport is by bus or by car (taxi).

The price of a bus depends on the distance you travel. It´s is usually 1 sol or less for students.

The taxi is not cheaper, and you need to negotiate with the taxi driver. It is more or less between 5 soles to 20 soles.(depend the distance of the travel)

Lima has a wide variety of restaurants and bars where you can taste food and drink local and international, and Peruvian cuisine, widely recognized in any field. Meals: The important meals are: breakfast (7-9h), lunch (12.30-14.30h), and dinner (19.30-21.30h). But sometimes people have another 2 little meals: in the morning as a “second breakfast” (10-11h) and the “lonche” in the afternoon (17.30-18.30h).

Smoking: It’s forbidden in public buildings except in the restaurants, bars and clubs with license.




Tourism and entertainment activities

City surrounded by formidable archeological, historical and artistic monuments. Declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1991, has maintained its rich historical center, through the years. This place also known as the "Damer of Pizarro”, the distribution of its streets as a chess board, with one important example of colonial architecture.
