A Little Bit of History

Marília (SP)

Located in the central-western state of São Paulo, distant about 440 km from the capital. Marilia is considered the city of the food industry, there are over 100 factories selling their production to the domestic market and exporting quality. The city also stands out in commercial and educational sectors, with five higher education institutions.

Population: 216.745 inhabitants (IBGE Estimate-2012)

Marilia with London has one of the largest concentrations of nipo descendants of the interior of Brazil. Marília is next to the cspital egg's,Bastos.

In Marilia, the community created the Nipponese Nikkei Club, a club which is still in Japanese traditions. The team's Nikkei Club baseball is one of the best known within this category.

Annually, always in April, the community realizes the Japan Fest festival, with several attractions for the public including the eastern groups of traditional Japanese presentation, exhibition of handicrafts, beauty contest (Miss Nikey) also are the provision of public several booths where you can sample the culinary Nipponese or even subscribe to one of the employment agency in Japan


Italian

The Italians are also part of the culture mariliense. As the Japanese community, the Italian community holds an annual festival typically, this is the ""Feast of St. Anthony"" held at the Avenue and communities of the same name, and also the ""Italian Festival"" with food and dances.


Education

The council is a regional center of higher education with excellence in the field of Medicine with FAMEMA, also counting on other univeridades and colleges. The technical and technological education in the city also has great merit. Thus educational institutions Marília every year attract thousands of students from various parts of the country.

Weather

Marilia is a Brazilian city of São Paulo. Stay away from the state capital 443 km by road. It is located at latitude 22 ° 12'50 South and longitude 49 ° 56'45 West, with an altitude of 675 meters. Its population is estimated by the IBGE in 2009 was 225 938 inhabitants, so the 13th largest city in the interior of number of inhabitants.

The city of Marília in all its extension is located on the western branch of the Sierra Treble which crosses from east to west. The foothills of this mountain usually end in walls of earthenware covered with vegetation. Within the municipality receives some special designations: Avencas Saw, Saw Cincinatina (where the Morro Redondo), Serra do Tiveron; Serra do Scomparim: Sierra Sierra Macuco and Casa Grande.

Arriving at the City

By Plane

If you’re coming by plane, you should buy the ticket at Guarulhos Airport or Congonhas Airport. The flight to Marília costs about US$100,00 and is one hour long. There is 2 flight companies from São Paulo to Marília: Pantanal Airlines (from Congonhas Airport) and Passaredo Airlines (from Guarulhos Airport). By Bus

If you’re coming by bus, you should buy the ticket to Barra Funda bus station, there is a bus every hour from 6:15 am to 11:50 pm.

The bus to Marília costs around US$40,00 and the company is called “Expresso de Prata”. It is reasonably comfortable and the trip takes 6 hours, with one 15-minute stop.

We would be glad to pick you up at Marília’s bus station or at Marília’s airport, so we kindly ask you to send us back your CC and call us as soon as you buy your ticket, to tell us your arrival time.

The University

We are proud to say that our school is the pioneer in ever adopt the Problem Based Learning method in Brazil. It consists of working in small groups, usually 8 to 10 students, in all kinds of activities, such as: tutorial sessions, bed-side teaching since the first grade, and community work on health related issues. Our structure consists of one school building, two university hospitals (one for general practice, and another for women and children’s care), one blood center, one eye institute, and one day clinic.

It consists of working in small groups, usually 8 to 10 students, in all kinds of activities, such as: tutorial sessions, bed-side teaching since the first grade, and community work on health related issues.

You will be assisted by the professor responsible for the department in which you have been placed. You should bring, at least, your own stethoscope (if attending a clerkship exchange) and white jackets (if attending either clerkship or research exchange).

Type of Accomodation

Host's House

You will be provided accommodation with one host student (of course a student from our med school), who may live alone, with the family or with other students as well. We’ll be sending you his/her e-mail, or he/she will get in touch, so you can have a better contact before arriving. Your meals will be served at the cafeteria of the hospital.


The Local Committee

It is one of the oldest committees of IFMSA - BRAZIL, we've had several national directors, the last two national presidents and a former SCORP-D. We have around 25 people on the committee, always very active in activities, whether campaigning, is collaborating on staff exchanges. The family spirit is very present for the union that we have and most people are not from Marilia.

Social Programs
