About the City

Sohag

Sohag governorate is located at the center of Upper Egypt and south of the capital Cairo. It lies south of Assuit, north of Qena, west of the Red Sea and East of the New Valley. Sohag city is the administrative centre of Sohag Governorate. The coast of Sohag over the Nile is 125 km long where it is located on both banks. Inside the Nile there are two great islands, the first is Karaman Island which has many investment projects, and the second is El-Zohoor Island which is marked by its chalets and social sport club.

Sohag monuments

Like many of Upper Egypt governorates, Sohag boasts several monuments. It houses the relics of early ancient Pharaonic kings. Apart from Ebgo-Abydos, the hub of Pilgrims in ancient epochs, it also possesses a number of prestigious masterpieces of military, funereal and religious architecture. Near Baliana"town south sohag", there are some monuments of Abydos, the pilgrimage center in ancient Egypt including Temple of Seti I. Other religious tourist attractions are Sohag's Deir al-Abyad and Deir al-Ahmar (the White and Red Monasteries respectively). In Akhmim town, known in ancient times as Khenti Seti, there are the Akhmim monuments which consist of major Pharaonic remains such as the of Temple Ramses II with its four statues, including two of Ramses II, one of his daughter Meret Amun and another of a woman from the Ptolemaic era. Osiris Temple has a limestone edifice built by Seti in Monshah Town, the capital of Upper Egypt in the Graeco-Roman period. The town was constructed during the reign of Ptolemy I. It was the second capital of Egypt, after Alexandria, during the Ptolmic dynasty. In Sohag also, there are Al-Hawaweesh Tombs, which date back to the Old and Middle Kingdoms and Al-Salamoni Tombs, the wall of which show fine inscriptions combining both Egyptian and Greek arts. There is also Wadi-Bi'r el Ein, a valley with a water spring, believed to be effective in helping women conceive. Nag' el-Mashaikh, contains Ramses II's Temple, renovated by Minfitah (19th Dynasty) as well as stone tombs, prominent of which are those of Inhert-Mess, chief priest of Thess under King Minfitah's reign













Location & nearest airport

Sohag is linked to Cairo , Giza and Northern cities through three main roads: road of Asyut Western Desert, Eastern Desert Road, Rural Road It's also connected to it through the train. In February 2010 a new highway linking the city to the Red Sea city of Hurghada was opened facilitating the ease the movement between Upper Egypt and the Red Sea coastal region. In May 2010, the Egyptian President inaugurated a brand new airport to serve the city called Sohag Airport


How to reach

- by plane : Sohag Int. Airport , - by train : 7 hrs from Cairo train staion. - By bus : 7-8 hrs from Cairo.


Medical School History and available departments

Sohag faculty of medicine was opened in 1991.It has developed and expanded and it now includes well-equipped clinical departments, about 24 operation rooms & about 1000 bed. It provides clinical training for 1581 under graduated medical students. It also provides training for postgraduate medical students. It offers medical service and health care, free of charge & offering paid -treatment, to the University community and the people of sohag ,qena,luxor & aswan governorates.

Accommodation

You will stay in a student hostel at reasonable distance from both the Hospital and the city centre '5 minutes'

We provide at least one meal a day at central restaurant.


Scientific Program

All Clinical and Pre-clinical departments. The student must complete at least 21 Day of the clerkship in order to get the certificate.


Social Program

There’s an organized social program to complement your clerkship. During the week days, activities will occur only in the afternoon and at night and in the weekend you can discover Egypt ,,you can go to Luxor, Aswan, Hurgada, Cairo, Alex and Sharm el sheikh. You can modify program as you like













FAQs

  • Is it safe to stay in Sohag ?

-Well, we can say that it is totally safe , shops are open, police patrols are available all the time in streets , no delay in school or university you can walk late in streets and still feel safe .

  • How is the climate in Sohag, what cloths should I bring?

- it sunny all over the year in sohag , rarly rains , roughly the year is divided into 2 main reasons : - summer ( 3,4,5,6,7,8,9 ) : it's hot and sunny during the day (30-40) degrees and fair at night (25-30) degrees / light cloths / for females light cloths are acceptable but it shouldn't be too skinny ( shorts and similar garments are not allowed in the city or campus) - winter (1,2,10,11,12) : it 's fair and sunny during day(18-25) degrees and cold at night it reaches (5-18) degrees.

  • transportation across the city ?

- private taxi is very cheap here , the highest fare you can pay is about 5-10 LE = 1-2 $ and sure it goes anywhere within the city.
