Welcome to Toluca!!!!!! the highest city of Mexico is ready for giving to all the incomings the highest doses of fun!!!
Toluca de Lerdo (or just Toluca) is the state capital of Mexico State as well as the seat of the Municipality of Toluca. It is the center of a rapidly growing urban area, now the fifth largest in Mexico. It is located 63 kilometers (39 mi) west-southwest of Mexico City and only about 40 minutes by car to the western edge of the Distrito Federal.
According to the 2005 census, the city of Toluca has a population of 467,713, with 747,512 as the total municipal population. The city is the eighth largest in Mexico in population. The municipality of Toluca, along with twelve other municipalities make up the metropolitan population of 1,610,786 as of 2005, making it the fifth most populous metropolitan area in Mexico and the largest entirely within the State of México.
The Cosmovitral is located in a stone and ironwork building in the center of Toluca built in 1910 by engineer Manuel Arratia in order to accommodate the “16 de Septiembre” market. It was constructed in Art Nouveau and Neoclassical style, with an area of 5,000 square meters. It is now a botanical garden with more than 400 species of plants from all over the world. It also features a series of stained glass windows that are considered the largest in the world.
These windows were created and designed by a Mexican artist named Leopoldo Flores. Cosmovitral was inaugurated in 1980 and completed in 1990. The stained glass ceiling represents the Milky Way and joins the “Hombre Sol” (Sun Man) with the Galaxy of Andromeda. It is a monumental piece measuring 3,200 square meters with more than 30 thousand pieces and half a million glass pieces of 28 different colors coming from many different parts of the world such as Italy, Germany, France, Belgium, Japan, Canada and United States. It has a series of scenes that symbolize man's search of the light, the good and the wisdom to elevate his spirit to liberate him from the shadows of evil and the ignorance in an epic tale without beginning or end. At the spring equinox, the solar disc crosses the heart of "El hombre Sol" (the sun man), causing an explosion of light.
As Toluca is located in the center of the Mexican republic, it is really easy to go anywhere inside the country trough plane or bus, everything a visitor could want: sun, beaches, archaeological sites, music, art, gastronomy and the best options for having fun!!!.
Public hospitals in Toluca
Doctors and nurses in public hospitals in Toluca such as IMSS (Instituto Mexicano del Seguro Social) CMLALM (Centro Médico Licenciado Adolfo López Matéos) or IMIEM (Instituto Materno Infantil del Estado de México) are excellent-trained, And most of them are willing to share their experience and knowledge, And they have always open doors for the IFMSA Clerckship Students from 8:00 to 13:00, and you´ll be free the rest of your day, or if you want, you can stay somedays for doing Guards at nights.
The practical training period for students (maybe 98%) is developed in Public Hospitals since that's where almost every Mexican looks for medical attention. So you will find every kind of medical cases going from the easiest one to the weirdest and most complicated one, meaning that it's a great chance to learn a lot!!!.
In our system of education, the student is taught one clinical or basic science subject intensively for a period of several weeks. This approach is extremely effective since the students can bring all of their concentration to bear on one subject at a time. The typical class day of 6-8 hours consists of lectures with audio-visual presentations in one of the lecture halls.
These are followed by laboratory studies, discussions of specific clinical problems, highly personalized small-group seminars and question-and-answer sessions guided by supervising professors and teaching assistants.
We Also have at our Univerity here at Toluca, a Unique Clinical Skills Laboratory. That is also open for the IFMSA incoming students for being a complement to your clerckship, where you can practice any kind of clinical skill that you can imagine, like: Sutures, intubation, taking care of a robot patient that simulates hundreds of diseases, giving CPR, A gynecological and Obstetric robot Patient, Laparoscopic virtual Simulator, and a lot of more surprises.
The Clinical Skills Laboratory Practices.
Undergraduate medical training includes study of the basic sciences, laboratory work, and intensive clinical instruction. This new laboratory is the perfect bridge between the theory and the clinical practice, the Students from any grade can start developing habilities, whitout the risk of harming real patients, and once they are ready they would be able to perform lots of procedures more confident because of the experience gained at the Clinical Skills Laboratory.
And as a unique oporunity, Our Medical School opens the doors of this Laboratory to the IFMSA Incoming Students to Toluca!!!
- Family is the first priority.
- Children are celebrated and sheltered.
- We are very nationalistic and proud of long history and traditions.
- "Old world formality" meaning that etiquette and manners are seen as measure of breeding.
- We eat a LOT of chilli.
- Some people here don’t understand English. This doesn’t mean they are deaf. Hand gestures, a non-threatening tone, and a smile can put them at ease and help them understand your Spanglish.
- We like to drink tequila, and mosquitos(typicall drink of toluca make out of orange)!!! hehe ;-D
- We are really easy going and relaxed.
- Many Mexican families are pretty traditionalist so please be careful about respect.
- Most families are catholic so they go to church every Sunday, but they respect diferent thoughts and opinions.
- Greetings are essential. A simple “Buenos Dias” in the morning, “Buenas Tardes”, in the afternoon, and “Buenas Noches” at night, will go a long way.
- Someone showing you the back of their hand is not a threat. It is the gesture for ’thank you’.
- Drinking before 5pm won’t get you branded an automatic alcoholic. It is common for people to have a Corona with lunch (emphasis on “a” Corona). So feel free to enjoy a Margarita when lounging on the beach in the mid day sun. Just don’t overdo it. ;D
Most of students are placed in student's houses, so that way you´ll see from the inside the way of living of a medical Mexican Student. Most hospitals porovide food and drinks, or if it is not possible at the hospital, at our Medical School Cafeteria, and most of the time the students (who you'll be staying with) also provide breakfast and dinner.
Inside the cities the easiest and cheapest way to travel is by bus, the same thing if you want to travel between cities or states (long distance). We also have cheap airlines in Mexico. Here are some links where you can find more information about costs.
The climate of Mexico varies according to altitude. The low-lying coastal areas are typically tropical, hot and humid, but the weather in Mexico City, which is sited at an altitude of 2,300 metres above sea level, is far more moderate. Mexico City has pleasant summers and mild winters, with an annual average temperature of 64 °F (18 °C). Seasonal variations in temperature are small, but May is the warmest month of the year, and January the coldest, when night frosts are possible. Mexico has a high average annual rainfall, most falling in summer, the wettest month being July, and the driest month February. In the norht weather can be extremly hot and dry during summer months. You can find weather on this page. Please note that it will be in Spanish. Once you're inside you can easily change the language for English. www.espanol.weather.com/ Weather Page.
This is a really difficult category to describe because there are literally thousands of places, including dozens that are worthwhile. Because it is such a competitive market, night clubs, bars and restaurants are constantly reinventing themselves and places that are packed one weekend are deserted the next. For that reason it would probably be best to Ask the LEO in each LC.
You can imagine all the nice parties you can get in MEXICO, here is one example.... NEAR TULUM BEACH at mexican caribbean... there was a party with excellent Djs such as INFECTED MUSHROOM or ASTRIX , besides the beach, neon lights, fire balls dancers, jungle, people dancing until day...amazing place and party !! This was something to mention since there are locations and Djs all the year... sometimes near pyramids, in the middle of rainforest, in caves, volcano crater, churches, forest, deserts, etc.
