About the City

Xalapa, state capital of Veracruz, is located in the foothills of the Sierra Madre Occidental, at 1400 meters over the sea level. It is known as the “Athens of Veracruz” and “The city of flowers “. Although it is the capital state, and have about 457,614 people, is a city with a lot of provincial flavor, which cultural reputation is recognized national and internationally. There is a huge student population that is attracted by the university´s prestige, and so it creates a very cultural and interesting environment. It has large vegetation, a very nice weather and incredible warmth of its people. Our University

Since 1974 The Faculty of Medicine Campus Xalapa from “Universidad Veracruzana" (UV) has been characterized by their hard work in the academic training of medical students. In the last years students curriculums has been in a process of transitions from a rigid model to a flexible one in which gives greater autonomy to the student. In order to combine theoretical knowledge with abilities and aptitudes, the clinical practice starts after the second year and follows the remaining five years.

MISION. The Faculty of Medicine of the Universidad Veracruzana is an institution of higher education committed to prepare professionals to practice general medicine, through comprehensive and harmonious education, in the intellectual, social, human and professional: that allows the total development of knowledge, abilities, skills and values; to promote, preserve the health, prevent, diagnose, treat and rehabilitate timely the pathologies that affects the population, with responsible participation in the environmental conservation, in the regional context, state, national and international.

VISION. Being an accredited and recognized regional Faculty, national and internationally as an academic institution that promotes the scientific knowledge, technological and of social transformation en the field of medical teaching; keeping and disseminating culture, promoting sport, implementing new technologies and extending services always in search of the harmonious development of the institution therefore, the excellence of their graduates with a high human and ethic sense, fully supporting the society development.

Our health care system

Xalapa is a city of concentration in what health concerns about; most of the patients from the center region of the state are channeled to our hospitals. The Centro de Especialidades Médicas(Center of Medical Specialties) "Dr. Rafael Lucio"(CEMEV) will be your host hospital for the performance of the clinical practice; with a short history but with thousand merits, has became in one of the most important hospitals in center and east the country. Count with several medical specialties evaluated and certificated by "El consejo de Salubridad General y Educación en Salud" (Council of General Salubrity and Education in Health) what will warranty that during your visit you are going to have attention and a quality training.

Cultural

The Athens of Veracruz Xalapa achieved fame as a cultural center since the mid-nineteenth century: in 1843, under the name National Association of Xalapa. In the early twentieth century, was the epicenter of stridentist, in the early 70's artistic and academic activities of the Universidad of Veracruz, forefront of artistic and literary activities in the country.

Today, the Universidad of Veracruz has the prestigious Institute of Culture and Veracruz has one of the best symphony orchestras nationwide.

Cultural movement that takes place in Xalapa is intense and full of activities throughout the year, both indoors and outdoors. This City offers a diverse range of both performing and literary creations, through institutions such as The City, the Universidad Veracruzana, Veracruz Institute of Culture, The Ministry of Education, The State and Municipal DIF, the Mexican Institute of Social Security, as well as a broad movement that finds its way independent expression in cultural centers, small forums, galleries and festivals in coordination with the institutions.

The Agora of the, has art galleries, a forum usually presents international exhibitions of cinema and outdoor forum. Xalapa also has 13 galleries, 3 of them being independent, allowing exhibitions of various plastic streams.

Other important cultural centers are the Recreation Center Xalapa, Xalapa House Museum both the City Council, the Cultural Center of Los Lagos (The Lakes), La Pinacoteca Diego Rivera, The Contemporary Art Gallery and Sculpture Garden, the latter of Veracruz Institute of Culture.

Interactive Museum of Xalapa is a new spaces dedicated to meeting the learning needs of children.

The museum of Anthropology of Xalapa presents almost 30 centuries of art and history. It guards the most important collection of pre.Columbia works produced by the groups who have been living in the state of Veracruz.

The museum is a dependency of the Universidad Veracruzana, which gives to it a character of “living museum” of a organization changing and updating its contents thanks to the investigation. It was created in 1957, being the first one of the country in this type, the present building was constructed in 1986, designed by Edward Durell Stone, an architect from New York

The museum opens every day of the year from 9:00 to 17:00 hrs. There are 18 galleries, 6 rooms and 4 yards to be seen, where 2500 of the 29000 pieces are exhibit. This patrimony has been divided and lodged into several rooms using chronological and geographical criteria. Parks and Squares as watercress, Juarez Park, Plaza Lerdo, Xallitic and our streets, have also become spaces where creators have found an ideal space for artistic work.

Xalapa, remains at the forefront of artistic expression and cultural development and is one of the most attractive cities of this nation and essential reference when it comes to art and culture


Accommodation & Boarding

Students are hosted in committee member´s house. According to the schedule of attendance, the hospital could offer a meal, which is regularly typical Mexican food. If you stay at night in the service, you will receive the dinner. No pocket money.

The social program depends on the season year of interchange and perception of incomings. But we assure you that ours is the best social program in the country.

During the summer, you can take a trip to other states (Oaxaca, Tabasco, Chiapas, Puebla). Moreover, Xalapa has an excellent location for ecotourism. You can make some changes.


Social life

Xalapa has a really wide nightlife and for everyone´s taste. Starting with those that look for a relax mood, see a good play at the theatre, go to a concert of the Xalapa´s Symphony Orchestra, to an art exhibition, or just have a good time enjoying a nice chat in one of the many cafes; to thunderous and imposing joints and bars for those who want to dance and have big fun. Xalapa has an endless list of places perfect to join and enjoy its charming nights.

Getting there:

You can arrive to Xalapa by bus or plane and we always are going to received you as incoming in the airport or in the main bus station.

By Plane:

By bus:

If you decide travel from Mexico City to Xalapa in bus. You should arrive to the East Mexico City Bus Station (TAPO). You have to talk with your LEO because; maybe he can help you to arrive to this station. If you get to Mexico City, you can grab a bus to Xalapa´s terminal at a cost about $280.00MX in a travel time of 4 hrs. If you arrive Veracruz´s Airport which is near to Xalapa you can get direct transport with a travel time of 2:00 hrs and cost about $ 250.00MX http://www.ado.com.mx/ado/index.jsp

Getting around: Inside the city of Xalapa, the public transport is cheap with different routes that can easily transport you safely, with a price of $5.00MX for students and $8.00MX for general public.


Climate

The weather is humid and varied, with a maximum temperature of 34.3 ° C and minimum from 5 to 10 ° C in the morning. The city's altitude ranges from 1.250 m to 1.560 m. It has an average temperature of 18 ° C and a humid temperate climate. Its annual average rainfall is 1,509.1 mm. The snowfalls are common in Perote, Veracruz, located 35 minutes from the Capital.

Special Remarks

All students must wear appropriate clothing, closed shoes in the hospital, white pants, white coat, and stethoscope and fill the notebook IFMSA official exchanges in order to receive the certificate.

The clinical rotation is from Monday to Friday, the time can be varied depending on the area, but never more than 8 hrs per day. You can do any guard at night if you decide. Saturday and Sunday are free for social program.

Not everybody in the hospital speak English, so you have to speak basic Spanish for having communication in the hospital and with patients. But do not worry we’ll always be there to help! Our unavailable period is December.
