Prambanan A thousand years ago, Yogyakarta was the center of ancient Mataram Kingdom which was prosperous and high civilized. This kingdom built Borobudur Temple which was the biggest Buddhist temple in the world, 300 years before Angkor Wat in Cambodia. Some other relics are Prambanan Temple, Ratu Boko Palace, and dozens of other temples scattered throughout Yogyakarta.

Parangtritis In the southern part of Yogyakarta, you will find many beaches. The most famous beach is Parangtritis with its legendary figure of Nyi Roro Kidul (Queen of the South), but Yogyakarta has also many natural beautiful beaches in Gunung Kidul.

Yogyakarta is rich in traditions, arts and its strong Javanese culture. The fact that the kingdom or the Keraton of Yogyakarta is still very much holds a significant role for the people of Yogyakarta, it has become a tourist magnet for domestic and foreign tourists to see how traditions is kept and preserve. Other than the Keraton itself, there are many other things Yogyakarta is famous for, such as: batik, leather puppets or wayang kulit, gamelan music, traditional dances, silver work, pottery work, and its traditional ceremonies.

Batik Batik is one of Indonesia’s proudest exports. There are a lot of cities in Indonesia that are famous for its batik, and Yogyakarta is one of them. Batik is a very delicate crafts, involving sketching, mbatik or filling the sketch with batik motifs and patterns using malam or wax, and then dyeing. So it requires a lot of patience and generally takes a long time to produce one complete product. Thus, in earlier history batik is only worn by the Javanese royal family due to its sophisticated work, but nowadays everybody can wear them.

Wayang Kulit Wayang Kulit is a unique form of theatre employing light and shadow. The puppets are crafted from buffalo hide and mounted on bamboo sticks. When held up behind a piece of white cloth, with an electric bulb or an oil lamp as the light source, shadows are cast on the screen. Wayang Kulit plays are invariably based on romantic tales, especially adaptations of the classic Indian epics, "The Mahabarata" and "The Ramayana". Some of the plays are also based on local happenings or other local secular stories. It is up to the conductor or "Tok Dalang" to decide his direction. The Dalang is the genius behind the entire performance. It is he who sits behind the screen and narrates the story. With a traditional orchestra in the background to provide a resonant melody and its conventional rhythm, the Dalang modulates his voice to create suspense thus heightening the drama. Invariably, the play climaxes with the triumph of good over evil.

Gamelan Gamelan is often called Javanese orchestra, because it consists of a set of instruments such as metallophones, xylophones, drums, and gongs; bamboo flutes, bowed and plucked strings, and vocalists may also be included. Today, and historically, gamelan usually accompanies dance, wayang puppet performances, or rituals or ceremonies. Typically players in the gamelan will be familiar with dance moves and poetry, while dancers are able to play in the ensemble. In wayang, the dalang (puppeteer) must have a thorough knowledge of gamelan, as he gives the cues for the music.
